Fontanafredda, founded in 1858, emerged from the romance between the King of Italy Vittorio Emanuele II and Rosa Vercellana. Located within Piedmonts Langhe region, Fontanafredda is celebrated as the largest private producer of Barolo. The winery holds approximately 120 hectares of organic vineyards and has developed what they call Italy's first "Storytelling Village," which allows visitors to experience the estate's rich history and culture. Committed to sustainability, Fontanafredda emphasises organic viticulture and environmentally friendly practices, such as water recycling and the use of eco-friendly packaging. The estates unique village structure, where 15 families live and work on-site, reflects its communal roots and dedication to sustainable agriculture and winemaking.
Under the leadership of Technical Director and Chief Winemaker Giorgio Lavagna, alongside long-time Chief Agronomist Alberto Grasso, who drives the estates organic viticulture initiatives, the Fontanafredda team is dedicated to sustainability and innovation. They honor the estates historic legacy while embracing organic practices, including the use of indigenous yeasts, reduction of sulphites in all wines, and aging mainly in premium French and Slavonian oak casks according to more ancient Piedmontese tradition.
